Creating links from contact icons

Hiya,
Rather than use a contact form on my site, I’d like to have a group of icons which the user can select depending on how they want to contact me. I created a couple of icons and added them to the contact page as images…but of course when clicked on they just open up as images. How do I, for eg, set the ‘envelope’ icon up so when selected an email window opens?
