Create custom static front page – stuck

I’ve been following the instructions on this page of the codex:

I get as far as:

Enable “Permalinks” to show the “page title” in the address

and get stuck – because when I go to Settings>Permalinks I see:

• Default (which is selected)
• Day and name
• Month and name
• Numeric
• Custom structure

I imagine that I should be using the custom structure. But what to put in it?

I have actually tried a number of things:

• http://www.mywebsite.com/blog/
• http://www.mywebsite.com/blog/%postname%/
• /blog/
• /blog/%postname%/
• /%postname%/

with absolutely no success – so if anyone out there could give me a steer I would be very grateful – 🙂
