You can customise the form width using CSS in most contact form plugins.
I am new to web sites and from what I have learned it would be best to create a child theme to accomplish what you have said. For now I want to get a site up & running then work to improve the site.

You can use a contact form plugin on any site without problems. As for child themes, it really depends upon what theme you are using, whether it is child-theme friendly and if you want to continue to be able to upgrade it.
You are not going to be able to find a contact plugin that specifically sets the generated form at 300px or less. Most do not even define a width.
Thanks. The contact me plug in set up a contact page that has the form on it. I want a form that goes in the left column of my static home page which is 300 pix max.
Grunion can do it via CSS
#content, #content input, #content textarea { width: 300px; }
.pushbutton-wide { width: auto; }
