You are right that no template is included, but it seems to depend on the theme if that works or not. Which theme are you using?

It’s a custom theme based on underscores
OK, I’ve quickly created a underscores based theme for testing and it works for me. It should not be necessary to change the template because in compatibility mode the post result ist filtered which happens before loading the template. So maybe there’s a confilct with another plugin.
Just to be on the safe side I’ve added a filter for template_include. Current DEV version is available at https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/404page.zip. Would you please test it?
Compatibility mode has to be turned on manually in this version.
