Basically our domain registration was suspended because it expired and the company didn’t tell us.

Since we registered our address the price for renewing has more than doubled, so we’ve bought a new, cheaper address.

Our site and WordPress installation are in exactly the same place as before.

Having pointed the new URL at the correct folder on the server and put the new database hostname into wp-config.php, how do we reconfigure WP so that it knows it’s now at a new address? All links on both the site and the admin console obviously still point at the old address.

Simply running install.php again is likely to break things isn’t it?

    Cheers.

  • Running install.php would nicely erase everything. You don’t want that.

You set the two URL values in admin > Options > General to the new url/domain.

I don’t know, erasing everything has that sexy sense of danger to it πŸ˜‰

I’m being foiled by Sending Referrers at the moment.

Your registrar didn’t let you transfer your domain name to another registrar? Can I know who they are so I’ll avoid them?

    cocca.cx

So I have a question that’s kinda related to this one. I’m the the process of switching hosts and figured I’d do the 2.3 to 2.5 upgrade while I was at it. Rather than risk screwing up the live blog (let’s call it aaaa.com), I transfered an unused domain name to the new host to test the blog on (let’s call it bbbb.com). After I ran the upgrade script, it redirected me to aaaa.com which is still on the old host. whenever I type in “bbbb.com” into the URL bar, it redirects to aaaa.com.

I double checked to make sure there were no redirects setup in DNS, so the only conclusion I can come to is that this issue has something to do with the new install of wordpress thinking that it’s still being hosted at aaaa.com. Since I can’t log into wp-admin on bbbb.com, is it possible to change the URL values manually? Thanks

    phpMyadmin is the answer.
Edit the wp_options table: change the site_url and home values to the new url/domain.
NOte. The wp_ is the default table prefix, yours might be different!

    Awesome THANKS!

    Victory.

Had to manually change the siteurl in the wp-options table via phpMyAdmin on the database, then I could properly access the admin console.

Ah, yep, just done that moshu. Cheers πŸ˜‰

In case you missed: you need to change the site_url AND home value. Both.

ravenheart, cocca.cx is not a registrar. It’s the domain name registry of the .cx tld. Perhaps you mean one of the companies in the list in http://registrars.cocca.org.nz/ .

Instructions for transferring are at http://helpdesk.cocca.cx/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=13&nav=0 . Did your registrar explicitly refuse to transfer it?

Is your original domain now released for new registration? I suggest you shop among the companies in http://registrars.cocca.org.nz/ and grab it again … before a cybersquatter does. Would you want porn to pop up when someone clicks an old link?
