• I created the site without knowledge about “friendly” links, winding up with the default Permalinks. Now, I am wishing to change them to %post-name%. This breaks the site I hear.

How can I get around this without have to start over from scratch?

Read the three articles @t-p suggested… they are very good.

Your permalinks should be fine in your case so go ahead and change them. I usually choose the ‘Day and Name’ setting!

Since you never actually set a custom permalink structure you’ll start seeing the ‘pretty permalinks’ but links that are using the default structure should still be fine as that is the underlying ‘permalink’ structure.

The ‘pretty permalinks’ are a boon to SEO and can really help attract visitors to your article when seen written out. I like including the day and date as that helps point out the ‘freshness’ of a new post while also denoting the age of the older posts which probably would have been deleted or replaced if they were not worthy of publication.

At times you might want to look at your older posts and replace them or edit the posts to reflect more info and a rewrite. In those cases a 301 redirect would be in order.
