Recover password? I don’t use gravatar so I’m not sure, you can get a plugin called simple local avatars (something along those lines) that just lets you upload the avatars to your own website rather than the gravatar thing.
They really need to let you just do that through wordpress without gravatar anyway.
With a lot of hassle I was able to do it 🙂

So according to gravatar I have a nice new picture now, but the silly green alien is still my avatar for some reason.

I’m not clear from your message which account you are logging in to, wordpress.org or wordpress.com.
To control your gravitar, you need to login or register at wordpress.com, not wordpress.org. Once in, go to Your account settings / Public profile / Profile photo. Upload a photo or image of choice.
Without further effort, WordPress and wordpress.org will pull in that image and show it against your posts.
For wordpress.com
That site is using the avatar I uploaded to Gravatar. This site – http://www.wordpress.org is not using the Gravatar avatar.
Are you using the same email address? The username does not have to be the same.
