• Hi,

I’ve checked as many threads on this as I could find and still can’t quite find a specific answer to this one.

I have a static front page set up, using the Front Page Template. What I’m trying to do is have the front page widgets displayed in a sidebar (preferably left side) instead of in the page footer. More specifically, I’m trying to add a menu widget on the side of the front page.

The menu displays fine in the footer, but I’d like it to display on the side for this page. I’d like to do it without using a child theme if possible (I know that would be best, but would rather not in this case).

Any help would be greatly appreciated…

  • What theme are you using? If it involves modifying theme files, a child theme IS the way to go.

Sorry about that, meant to add it and forgot.

Latest version of WordPress – theme is twentytwelve.

I’ve looked at creating child themes, but don’t quite have a handle on it yet. Figured for the purposes of the test site I’d start with keeping it to a theme mod, then look into doing it with a child theme for the production site…

Much better to get the child theme set up correctly the first time – otherwise all your changes will be lost when WP is updated and it’s also important to have a clean copy of the default theme for troubleshooting. It’s also MUCH harder to make a child theme after you’ve modified the parent theme.

You might instead look for a theme that has that layout available – Suffusion is one theme that has tons of options built-in, so may be easier to do what you want.

This is just a test site that won’t go into production or be updated, and will be removed when I’m done testing a few things out.

I like to take things a step at a time, and figured the first step would be finding out if (or how) this can be done, then applying it using a child theme once I’ve gone through that process.

Thanks for the heads up on Suffusion, I’d looked at quite a few themes but missed that one. I’ll check it out…
