• any attempt to change default installation theme crashes the site so that a page comes up with a “0” in it, presumably the code for the activation switch. Saw a posting that said preview first, then activate. That didn’t work. Also, to change the default theme directory name. That didn’t work?

  • What theme are you trying to use? Where did you download it from?

I downloaded Esplanade theme from the worpress site, installed it, activated it, and the site crashed in that on only page the comes up is a page with a “0” on it. This happened after 203 reinstalls of the whole wordpress installation. I saw the forum suggestions on previewing first, then activating. Renaming the default theme directory, etc. Nothing worked. Interesting that on another wordpress site, same web host, the new theme installed fine. It is not just esplanade, I can’t switch to any other theme (so far) on this particular site.

Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you in accessing your site’s error logs.
