I have set up and run several blogs/ sites using WordPress, so I feel generally comfortable with it, but a PHP guru I am not…and so I’m not sure if this problem is a proper function of a template or if there is a coding error that I’m just not aware of previnging proper function.

I am developing a website for a church at this address:
    http://mtbethelfamily.org/

And am using the Style Isle WordPress template (see here http://wpjunction.com/styleisle/) as my base. I really love it, except I had to redo the front page because it was a static page with a lot of mini-posts that I didn’t want or need. It also never did the typical category page like other templates either.

I was able to make the front page a bit more plain and it responds reasonably enough, but when clicking on a category link at the top (ministry pages, Pastor’s Pen, etc.) nothing happens.

I have added a category.php template and it is ignored completely no matter what I put it it. I tried it with a basic <p>test please </p> kind of thing just to see if it would even get recognized. It did not. And I tried it with the php code from the archives.php to see if that would get recognized and it didn’t.

Anybody know how to make a template see a category template page???

Thanks in advance for even reading.

  • Do you have any posts in any of those categories yet? Only the catgeory pages themselves appear to be working. Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems?

    Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I do have posts in all of the categories. I made sure of that too.

    On the second suggestion….
I am nervous to deactivate the plug-ins because the template requires them and won’t work properly without them. So, I’m not sure what will happen if I disable one (for this, I didn’t install extra plug ins). I don’t want to create some fatal error that would prevent me from getting back into it.

    And on the third suggestion…
I do believe that it’s a theme-specific problem as it isn’t an issue when use the default theme. Now, I haven’t switched back to the default theme in a few days. Will it kill any changes I’ve made to the existing theme if I do that again?

I know that might sound like a dumb question, please forgive.

That sounds like a bad theme or a theme that relies on a bad plugin. You’re probably best looking for another theme.

Thanks much, I was afraid that might be the answer. Grrr….

FYI, I fixed my problem. Turns out when I altered the permalink format, it fixed the issue.
