Check with your host. Maybe they are having problems with their MySQL server.

can use phpMyAdmin to access database (but of course it’s empty now)
read an old post that said this problem may be due to php Memory. Have asked host to check that and increase if necessary but it seems unlikely. I am successfully running postnuke and drupal installations on the same host with databases set up the same way.
If you do find out it is PHP memory, could you use the script described in Finding_server_info and report your PHP version back here.

Don’t think I’ll find that was it. Running php 4.3.11 with memory limit of 50M
host updated from php4.3.11 to php 4.4.7 and solved the problem
