• My site is loading super slow, sometimes the speed to fully load is 60 seconds. Other times it’s 4.3 seconds. My page size sticks around 8 MB and when I look on Pingdom my main issue seems to be leveraging browser caching and specifying a cache validator. All my other scores are 100.

I have tried plugin after plugin after plugin, and not a single one of them works. W3 Total Cache didn’t work, WP Super Cache, WP Super Minify, and countless others. Is it a server problem or an issue with my theme, or something else? It seems odd that none of the plugins, especially the high-rated and updated ones, don’t work.

When I activate W3 Total Cache I get an error message that I need to update my minify settings but I have no idea what to do once I get to that page. Could that be a problem, too?

Do you have any advice for me? My site is located at http://www.livelaughandplay.com.

  • 1) Check the site pages in Google Page insight tool https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/ to see what else can be optimized.
    2) Check your server configuration.

You have a LOT of content on your home page. Its really long. Does your theme allow you to choose how many posts show on the homepage?

If not, I think you can do this in “settings >> reading” and maybe turn it to like 7/8 or so?

That would be a good starting point as it means that you have to load lots of images which is never a good thing.

I’ve looked with Google Page insight, as well, forgot to mention that! It’s a great tool. It suggested I optimize my images, minify Javascript and CSS, and eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content. I have no idea what the last one is.

What do I do to check my server configuration? Google also recommended I reduce my server response time, but I don’t know if that’s something I can do. I’m hosted on iPage right now, and I like it because it’s easy to use, the support is great, and it’s incredibly affordable for me (I’m waiting to switch to something else once I know I’ll keep my site up and going).

    Thanks Innuvo, I’ll check that!

WOW. Reducing the number of posts reduced the page size to half down to 3.9 MB!

I reactivated my excerpt plugin and it’s down to 1.2 MB and 2.12 seconds loading time. That helped so much, Innuvo, thank you.

I am still wondering how to address the other issues, however, just so my page loads the fastest it can and rates better on Page Speed Insight and Pingdom.

    Glad that has helped!

What other issues do you mean @livelaughplay?

Also, with your header image, you have uploaded it at 1,500px × 375px but it is getting scaled to 1,020px × 255px.

I would suggest deleting the header image and re-uploading at the scaled size, that will save you a penalty.

That is what “serving scaled images” means, just for your information

Both Pingdom and Google PageSpeed tell me I need to optimize my images, leverage browser caching, minify CSS and Javascript, and reduce server response time. I’ve tried so many plugins but they don’t have any effect, like I never installed them in the first place. I have W3 Total Cache running, which does help the speed.

I’m currently compressing all my images using an application since I can’t get any of the image optimization plugins to work.

Try the ‘EWWW image optimizer’ to optimize the media library images.

I tried that earlier but to no avail. Google still tells me to optimize my images. I tried it again just now and the same result. I’m currently going through and using Compressor.io to losslessly compress all my images. It’ll take awhile but if it helps speed up the load time it’ll be worth it.

Do you think my theme could be the problem with the plugins not working?
