Does your host have a cpanel? phpMyAdmin? You could use those to find the db name. Or, you can ask your host.
Have you created the database yet? This need to be set up first! If so, then many webhosts would add a prefix to the database name you set. Ie:
Your set dbname = mywpdb
Server creates is as useraccountname_mywpdb
Hi, I’m ahving the same trouble, and I have everything set the way I did for my forum, it just can’t connect. I’m using blog as a subdomain on my site, would that be the problem?
Subdomain shouldn’t be a problem – I also have blogs on a subdomain,
Don’t set up everything as you did for your forum. Do it as it says in the WordPress instructions 🙂
No,I mean DB wise. Like I have xcvtech_wordpress as the db name, user is also xcvtech_wordpress, localhost, etc. (forum is on xcvtech_forum, etc.) but while my forum works, this does not.
oh.. i have to set up the database my self? where do i set it up in? wordpress directory?
you set it up with your hosting company… either in cpanel, or whatever type of control panel/user admin type thing that your hosting company has for you. just log into your hosting account and then look for how to manage your stuff…
I also have a similar problem myself, if I resolve it then I’ll tell you what I did to solve my problem.
I’ve resolved my problem, all you have to do is type the exact name, password etc in the wp_config file.
thank you! =] i’ve installed wp now, yay

I am having the same challenge as above. I have setup everything following the instructions and have checked and rechecked all of my settings. I receive the following message when attempting the install for wp-admin/install.php:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.
