Cannot create new category (WP 2.1)

    Problem > cannot create new categories

    Feb-11-2007 I just did fresh install of WP 2.1 (via Fantastico at Lunarpages hosting). Install went well and quickly. Was able to access admin panel and make a few test changes (new posts, etc.), BUT cannot create a new category. When I try to to so by entering a new category name, etc. and then hitting submit, NOTHING happens (no error, no new category, nothing). Checking the published site confirms no new category created. I have alternatively tried to create a new category from the “make a new post” screen instead, still a no-go.

    I tried full WP delete and another fresh install, but exact same problem.

    – I’m using Win XP-SP2
    – have tried using both MSIE 6 and Firefox
    – I’m logged in as the administrator, and have also tried logging in as an editor to no avail

    In each case, I have the same problem… I simply can’t create any new categories, no matter what.

    HELP! my launch onto WordPress has been a disaster so far. Anyone have an explanation or fix?

    PS: I ran the earlier version of WP just 2 months ago to test it out (using exact same method via Fantastico at Lunarpages) and it worked just fine.

    I have tried all the suggestion solutions and one “workaround” worked however that work around is by disabling the javascript in browser. I dont want a workaround, I want permanent solution by WordPress..

    Is this problem is being looked by the WordPress team/developers? I believe this is a serious bug. I have known more than 20 people (not including those who are complaining in this support forum) who are experiencing these problems (which by the way seems to be related to each other):

    cannot add new category
    cannot delete post
    an “Edit this post yes or No” appears before publishing an auto-saved post, then when Yes is clicked, post will be gone (as in gone and can no longer be recovered)

    Please, wordpress team, I really hope youre giving these problems attention. Thanks in advance.

    PS: not sure if this is related to my can’t-create-new-categories problem (or abnormal), but…

    I also noticed that when I navigate between items in the administration panel, I constantly get a warning “are you sure you want to navigate away from this page – OK?” (something like that)

    seems useless and is very irritating

    ……..

    still hoping for a fix someone? otherwise, it looks like WP 2.1 just doesn’t work, and sadly I will have to pursue other blogging software

    i think that is somehow related. i hate 2.1 series

    BTW, just tried WP 2.11 version, did not fix situation

    still cannot create any new categories

    now looking for alternatives, considering Expression Engine, Moveable Type

    I’m having trouble with this also. When I delete a post (from the manage tab), I get a dialog asking if I want to delete. Fair enough.

    Then when I answer yet, and navigate to anywhere else, it asks if I’m sure that I want to navigate away from that page.

    When I come back, the post is still there. A head scratcher.

    I’m having this same problem, which I just noticed today. But I did not have this problem a few days ago.

    Cannot create new category. Oddly, am able to edit names of existing categories.

    When I made a post today, using optional excerpt, after I finished the post was empty. But on my home page the excerpt was there. Just the page for the post was empty.

    Also, asking if I want to navigate away from page, which it did not do before.

    I was only able to put the new post up by directly entering it in the database using Phpmyadmin!

    Problem on home and work computer, using Firefox 1.5, 2.0 and Safari. So not browser problem.

    Also, had been using this install of WP for about 2-3 weeks at least, with no problem.

    Problem is, I’ve messed with a lot of different things recently before noticing the problem.

    I did try deactivating all plugins.

    I inadvertently changed the directory my domain points to, then changed it back. Was that it?

    I installed Awstats, maybe something i did in that process did it?

    Reinstalled my mac os, maybe something there caused it?

    I messed with my .htaccess file, trying to get Dreamhost stats to work, maybe that was it, but the permissions are 666, so should be ok. I changed the .htaccess back to original.

    Sorry, i did a bunch of stuff before noticing this problem. Doh.

    I guess I’ll be doing a new install of WP to see if that gets rid of the problem.

    I just installed WordPress 2.1.2, am experiencing all these problems: (1) can’t create new category, (2) get navigate away form page message. Previous Wp versions worked fine.

    Curiously, I can’t add a new category with Internet Explorer, but so far it’s working with Opera. Still, whatever bug is causing this problem reported by many many people should be fixed.

    Hi all,

    I was having the same problem with WP 2.1, namely can’t create new category. I did a re-install which did fix the problem for 2 weeks. This time around when the same problem occured again I was way too far into the site the do a re install one more time. I was determine to find the solution.

    Finally, today I found a post about using Category Manager plugins to solve “Can’t create new category” problem. All I did was installing this plug in and activate it. Every things is back to normal I can manage my categories again both from the plugin tab and the normal manage>categories tab. Try this solution and see if it work for you. It sure did for me.     i had the same problem. Couldn’t add a category in explorer but had no problems in mozilla. I compared the cookie settings and noticed that mozilla was set to look for a new page every time. i changed the cookie setting in explorer to match and problem solved. thank god.

    This happened to me. I noticed I was logged under “mydomain.com” when in the settings the site was entered as “www.mydomain.com”. I thought this might cause the cookies/ajax/whatever to cough, so cleared all my cookies and cache, logged in again under “www.mydomain.com” and it resolved the problem.

    I will join to this list and add : I am having the same problem”
    When I disable Javascript , all is well, but this is a workaround and not a real solution.
    I have WordPress 2.2.1
