• Im thinking about learning WP and using it as my main CMS. I have been using Umbraco for a short time but Im concerned that WP wont be able to do all the thinks that Umbraco can do. Can it be said that anything that can be done on a website can be done in WP? Do I have to rely on widgets or are they just for ease of use. Could I put in any jQuery carousel (not to be edited) for an instance? I can see that you are able to use Superfish menus but are editor able to add pages to the 3rd level easily.

    Thanks

  • WordPress can’t do everything. For instance I haven’t been able to figure out how to get it to mix me a drink…

But seriously, from what you’ve said there, there’s no problem with uisng WordPress. There might be a need for you to develop some custom plugins or functionality in your theme if it doesn’t currently exist, but things like carosels and superfish are very easy to implement.

You sure there isn’t a plugin for that?

-Sorry. I’m so very, very, sorry… I just couldn’t stop myself.

Thanks for that, mines a whiskey sour. Sorry but Im really trying to get a handle on what WP can do before I invest a lot of time in it: could I for instance have recursive elements when entered on one page appear automatically on another pages too.

Yes, that’s pretty easy. You can either have those as pages, posts, make your own custom post types or set up your own database tables to hold the info that you want. There’s a huge amount of functions that will work to retrieve posts and data and let you display it pretty much anywhere you want to.
