David, if you want to work cooperatively with CP, you have to be a part of their developer community. If you live in San Fran, I suggest going to CafePress Connect in October where there will be number of panels and presentation discussing third party tools. As a matter of fact, if you come by on the 15th (Sunday), I’ll be on the Affiliate Power Tools panel and would be happy to introduce you to some people who will make your business venture much easier.
I think what this boils down to is that our approaches are different (and that’s what surprised people who are used to your approach). Mine is very CP-centric. It’s about making it easy to plugin CP products anywhere you want (WP, Joomla, your website, wherever.)
David, your business is WP-centric. David’s approach will be perfect for those who only use WP, are techie enough to understand how to install his plugin and don’t need the added functionality.
The PG approach is especially appropriate for those who have more than one site (perhaps a blog, a CP shop and a website or two.)
Signing off.
Jessie
Unfortunately, I don’t live in SanFran. 😉
Actually, my ‘business’ is actually PHP-Centric. The WP stuff is effectively a ‘side effect’. The code can be used in any PHP driven website/blog/cms if you know what you’re doing. 😉 Actually, the entire ‘products’ section of my website is basically just CG-Amazon, not WP.
Also, I don’t really have a ‘business’ around my code — I get the rare donations here or there, but at the moment don’t make much of anything from it. That’s why I’ve considered going to a licensed model, like many of the big Amazon shop scripts are done under.
Yeah, you need to know how to install a plugin. 😉
I can see where ‘piping’ stuff through another site might help. It would allow you to do things like JS links, etc. And give you a central place to build your various lists. I’ve never much liked that approach, but I agree for some folks it could be quite useful.

David, I’d love to know when your CP plugin is done. I thought I’d registered on your site a while back for updates; might have been an old email addy though – I’ll check….
You can use my Contact Us form under About section, or just post a comment on the CGA or CGPP posts — I keep everything moderated at the moment, so everything is ‘private’ until I approve it or nuke it. 😉
