Broken mixed language

Perhaps i don’t know how to use WP-Syntax, but when i use it for one language only (e.g. only strings containing XHTML or only PHP) everything go well cause i know i have the reference (pre lang=”php” for example) but if i mix the two languages (strings containing PHP and HTML as i write about WordPress structure) what kind of reference do i use?
