Best Spam solution?

what is the best spam solution for wordpress.. I have been trying a bunch of stuff including hashcash and referrer bouncer.. but am having problems and errors with them..

is akismet and bad behavior the best to go with?

what are your experiences?

I am hoping to find one that requires close to zero maintenance, does not require hacking into the wordpress code and kills most if not all spam..
