author.php will not display

    I have been reading for the last 6 hours trying to figure this out.
    I need to display some custom fields on the authors profile page so I created author.php and it does not seem to work.
    I tried just about everything I came accross but it always displays archive.php instead of author.php.
    Correct me if I am wrong but from what I understand if author.php exists it is supposed to show when you go to a url like:
    http://domain.com/?author=1

    someone please help, I am about to rip my hair out.

    I am so tired. I am a huge dumbass. It would help if the author.php file was in the right folder.
