Arranging posts

I just started using wordpress, and I would like to have more flexibility in how I arrange my posts. For example I would like the most recent at the top, with 4-6 other in a square form below, each with a few sentences of text. (kind of like this site – http://www.regardinghorses.com) I am using the distinctive theme on wordpress.org.
