I realise this, I just need some help to achieve the results that would produce if there was a category parameter.
How about some self-help?
Doing a search for “monthly archives by category” it gives you 111 hits, and on the second page of the results this one:

Don’t just sit and expect ready made solutions. Chances are your question has been asked several times. Search.
cheers moshu, who would have thought that using search would return heaps of useless articles on the subject that aren’t asking for what I have above. I was simply asking if there was a simple answer, or some huge overhaul to backend files to achieve it.
