i have apache2 / php / mysql on a winxp box, and wordpress is really slow

Maybe you want to have a look on this: TSW [The Saint WAMP]. We prepare a plugin for this WAMP installer but until it is finished you can install WP by hand.

I run xampp and have no speed issues at all – plus is was really easy to install and get running. http://www.apachefriends.org/xampp-en.html
