• Looking forward to going further with WordPress and thought it just might be prudent to inquire as to whether my WP objective is feasible.

My server access is via c-panel with Hostgator and I would like to use WP_MS so that different sites are capable of a separate page rank, theme, plug-ins, etc….

I do have some experience with WP single site and plug-ins, updates
and maintenance were never a problem. If your advice would be to pay for tech assist then I would be interested in a contact through which to hire someone who would teach/guide me.

IF this is feasible as a DIY project, is there a particular setup you recommend? Also. any direction [WP.org or other] with details and/or documentation would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your guidance….

  • Hi there

Im a newbie to multisite too … in fact it’s so new my site is just going ‘live’ this morning

The whole process is very painless if you feel you are experienced with WordPress.

The areas to be careful with are the .htaccess file and creating a wildcard subdomain entry in your CPANEL.

Other than that … Id be watching out for people wanting to charge you $$ to join their members club.

take the ‘just do it’ approach, and if you break it … start again 🙂

Kinda skimpy on the details, there. 🙂

Here’s the short version: setting up your own network is like running your own mini version of wordpress.com.

all plugins & themes are shared.

If you’re looking for each site to have their own page rank, etc, pick subdomains, or do domain mapping with the plugin. you didn’t mention if you wanted different top-level domains for each site.

    And start reading. 🙂

the above FREE ebook has a TON of little gotchas in it.

Also comb through my archives: wpmututorials.com Yes, most of the archives are about wordpress mu, but a large portion is still applicable.

Dig in, try to break stuff, holler when you get stuck.
