Adding adsense ads

Can anyone help please. I have some adsense ads on my blog but the only area I seem to be able to place them is within the content, I have the adsense now lite plug in but if I align right or left the ads are still in the content area. I want to place ads in the right hand margin (I did change the template to include a right hand margin), do I need another plug in or do I have to put the code in a widget?? Would appreciate assistance! Thanks.
