If opening in a modal, an “x” icon should always be at the top right. If not, there shouldn’t be any “x” icon, because technically there isn’t anything to close. However, you can click the “back” button in your browser to navigate to the previous state at any time!
Sorry, but I can’t quite figure out what you’re suggesting here. But it’s a minor issue so doesn’t matter for now.

I have Tip Jar WP Stripe Test Mode enabled. When I try to make a donation using my own real credit card I get error “Something went wrong.”

You actually can’t use a real credit card in test mode. To attempt a test purchase, try using one of Stripe’s test credit cards:
