Add editable region

Hello everyone. I am new to WordPress and am trying to figure out how to create an editable section within the theme I am working in to create a section that can be edited without any coding. I have tried using my good friend Google but all I am getting out of these searches are plugin answers. I am not well versed with PHP but I am sure there is a way to create these in the theme PHP files to edit content in WordPress. Any help would be appreciated.
