Restrict access to WordPress site

I’m am trying to figure out how to build a login and restricted access for a custom wordpress site. I want people to be able to “Register” and have that be approved before they are given access to a section of the website meant only for registered members that sits behind a login page. Other parts should be viewable by the public. I’ve been looking all over and everything is about rules for editing posts and administration things. I don’t want that, just a login and then content to only display to those who are logged in that they would otherwise not be able to see. I can’t find any API’s along these lines and am not sure how to proceed.
