You can’t update that big a jump – you need to follow the extended upgrade instructions here:

I feel stupid. I’m afraid I made a mistake. My current WordPress version is WordPress 3.5.1. Does you earlier comment still apply?

Yes, but you REALLY need to get it updated to 3.6 – running an old version is a security risk and 3.5.2 contains several security patches.
OK, I upgraded successfully. Thanks for all your advice. There is one small glitch, however. After updating to 3.6, I noticed that there is now some kind of strange link at the very bottom of my site. It says “technology news” and is obviously designed for Google. I have no idea what’s keeping it there, but I need to get rid of it. Any ideas?
