I did a backup prior to running the upgrade. Would I be better off restoring those files and ending up at 3.3? What is the downside of reloading the admin and includes files?

very good! Did you do a database backup?
I think not all files were uploaded correctly, that’s why I suggest the manual update. There is no downside re-uploading those files.

Yes, it was a full database backup. I suppose if manually updated the files doesn’t resolve the issue then I can restore the backup.
why would wordpress tell us to upgrade to 3.4 when we really need to do a manual update? now my dashboard is gone.
Just update to 3.4 and am unable to post. The new post screen comes up blank with no way to add title or post contenct
Same thing happened to me. I didn’t turn off the plug-ins. I saw the upgrade message while I was on the phone and just hit the button. Now I get this:
Warning: copy(/home/brazoswe/public_html/wp-includes/pomo/entry.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/brazoswe/public_html/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 200

why to update without testing the new version ? it has too many bugs and so we would be losing visitors fairly
@keesiemeijer:
I have created a theme of my own but no one who in answer to my question
I followed @keesiemeijer’s recommendation. I uploaded 3.3 – everything except for the wp-content folder. It got my site back and everything is functioning with the exception of the updates page. It says I have a corrupted update.php file (which I could not upload because I did not have permission). So this is a good temporary fix that will get you up and running.

Well I did the restore and that didn’t work. It seems to be spiraling out of control.

I was in the process of deleting WordPress and reinstalling via GoDaddy when I recieved an update patch notice. GoDaddy installed the patch (whatever it was) and the site is up and working fine now.
