• I already have a non-wordpress website. e.g. http://www.mywebsite.com.
I also have a blog in a subdomain that is wordpress. e.g. http://www.mywebsite.com/wordpress-blog.
I would like to move my website onto wordpress at the main domain.

    1. I would like to build the new website at the same time as keeping the old website operational. I am thinking that installing the new wordpress into a different subdomain is the way to do this e.g. http://www.mywebsite.com/wordpress-website. How do I do this without accidentally overwriting the other wordpress installation? My hosting only allows manual installs, not fast, one-click types.

    2. Once I have built the new website, how do I move it to the original domain? e.g. http://www.mywebsite.com

    Thanks!

No, unfortunately I don’t think that answers my question. I know how to install WordPress. What I don’t know how to do is to put it in a different subdomain, and then move it to the main domain. I’m particularly scared that I might accidentally overwrite the existing WordPress blog that I have. That would be rather a disaster…

Please excuse the last 2 replies, they are spam 🙁

Assuming you installed WordPress previously, all you really need to do is create a new subdomain and upload/install it there. You can use the same database as long as you CHANGE the database prefix from the default wp_. You can use a plugin such as Duplicator to move the site to the main domain when you are ready.

Most importantly…BACKUP your site using a solution provided by your host or a plugin such as https://wordpress.org/plugins/backwpup/

Thanks Keith. Really useful information. I appreciate your help. Never heard of Duplicator before (great!) and a reminder to back up is always a good idea!

    Thanks.
