Okay, thank you. Having a bit of trouble limiting the posts that are displayed however, no matter what I set the $cat variable to index always shows all categories. Is there some other way to display only one specific category to the index of my blog? Thanks again,

If you are using a theme, adding $cat to your theme index will have no effect since wp-blog-header has already run by the time the theme index is loaded. You need to add $cat to the root index. Or, you can use a plugin. I have a plugin for choosing categories to show on the front page hanging around somewhere.
I would love to get my hands on your plugin, do you have a link for me?
