Error change editing theme

I have installed wp 4.9.1 and EDD 2.8.17.
With the active plugin I can not edit the functions.php file of the theme, an error appears
“Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.”
