pass-through redirect only works if you type www before the url

Hi! I’m using pass-through redirects to make certain links look nicer. This redirect works fine with I type the www before the url, but if I skip the www then I get redirected without the pass-through, so the URL box shows the actual link instead of the nicer looking url. Any advice how to fix this?

I’m not sure I understand. Can you give an example of what you are doing? If you can include a screenshot that would be great

Sure! Here is a screenshot of my redirect: https://i.imgur.com/FPx07cl.png

When I visit http://www.goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women, I see the page with the url http://www.goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women. This works correctly.

However, if I visit goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women (note no “www”), it redirects me to http://www.goinspire.com/trip-application/?trip=DestinAISHons&CID=70134000001Y8Ys&date=Womens+June+3 as it should, but the url it displays is http://www.goinspire.com/trip-application/?trip=DestinAISHons&CID=70134000001Y8Ys&date=Womens+June+3 instead of goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women.

So the redirect is working, but the “pass-through” is not working.

Does that make sense?

A passthrough isn’t a redirect and the second URL (http://goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women) is being redirected by something else other than Redirection.

I don’t know what is redirecting it, so you’ll need to investigate further to see what is happening. You can test this by disabling Redirection. The URL with www should stop working, but the one without www will probably keep working.

Hi John,

Thanks for your response. I set up that url to redirect in the Redirection plugin. When I disable the redirect I created, and click the link, I get “page not found”.

Note: by “when matched”, the selected choice is “pass-through”.

A passthrough is just Redirection running some code to make one URL look like another. It’s not redirecting anything. A redirect is when the server tells the browser to go to another URL.

The page at http://www.goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women is returning a valid page. It is not redirecting anywhere, and I assume the passthrough is working correctly.

The page at http://goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women is redirecting – it is returning a 301 redirect that is sending it to http://www.goinspire.com/trip-application/?trip=DestinAISHons&CID=70134000001Y8Ys&date=Womens+June+3.

Redirection is not performing the 301 redirect, something else is.

Okay, so using that terminoligy, the passthrough I created works as expected when you include www in the url, but acts as a redirect instead if you leave out the www. That’s the problem I am trying to fix.

When I disable my redirect (screenshot below), this link stops working:

http://www.goinspire.com/apply/destiny-women

I disabled it now, you can try the link and see.

When I disable the redirect/passthrough, neither link works. Both return “page not found”

I just re-enabled the passthrough so it’ll work with links that do include the “www”, let me know if you want me to disable it again.

Do you have any advice on how to fix my issue? The pass-through is functioning as a regular redirect when leaving out the “www” from the link.

Can you disable the redirect again? If you need the redirect to be working then you could create another passthrough (maybe /apply/destiny-women2/) with an identical target. Then I can test that without you needing to re-enable it again
