Edit: using the wysiwyg editor you can allow image uploads, if you also activate the setting “Allow image upload?”

I am also working on this project. it seems that the image can be uploaded in wysiwyg from the front-end only when the user is logged in.
When I view the Submit Form when I’m not logged in, I don’t see an option for uploading an image.

Not logged in users should never be able to upload images … you’re inviting problems in your house if you do so.
Concerning the category: use #_CATEGORIES in your single event format, or any other category-related placeholder. See the doc: http://www.e-dynamics.be/wordpress/category/documentation/7-placeholders/7-2-events/
