It should work with the free version. How did you confirm your php version?
Can you check trough this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-php-info/ and show me the screenshot of the PHP version?

I checked in the cpanel of the hosting account.
However, I did upload the plugin you provided, but the activation failed.
I received this error:
“Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_FUNCTION in /home1/shiftfin/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-php-info/includes/classes/phpinfo-page.php on line 15”
I am unable to upload a screen shot here.

Can you search the wordpress repository for “phpinfo” and install another alternative that does the same please? It should show you all your server information, to make sure that you are really not on an older PHP version.

I uploaded an info.php file to the public_html folder and yes you are correct, it was an older version of PHP.
Not sure why the cPanel would show other wise though, so I’ll take it up with the hosting service.
Thanks for your help with this! 🙂
Cheers
