Protect Posts Page

I want to create a blog site where all blogs are UNPROTECTED if accessed directly (via link), but where browsing the site is not possible. To do that I thought I would simply PROTECT the POSTS page (the page where all the blog posts would show).
But that isn’t working.
It simply doesn’t bring up the page that says that this is protected content, but shows the list of unprotected posts. (I only have one there right now.)
I implemented a work around – in that I protected the ‘Read More’ tag on the home page and below that tag is a link to the POSTS page.
Not very clean – but it works.
