Hi @catmaniax,
first of all, thank you for testing this new feature so quickly. I’m glad (almost) everything is working as expected. Not sure why your 4G connection could not be geolocated, probably no city is associated with mobile networks, since they are “mobile” indeed π This would be a question for MaxMind, though.
Regarding your site performance, yes, it will be affected. After all, instead of a 2Mb file, now Slimstat will need to load and scan a 60Mb file. However, with client mode enabled, the impact on performance should be minimized. I understand that this feature is not for everyone, as certain hosting providers have limited resources and slower HD setups.
Best,
Jason
Thanks for the reply.
I’m currently on a shared hosting so maybe it’s not for me, yet.
Can you please tell me how to properly disable it?
The thing with Client Mode is that unfortunately it does not detect users with Adlbockers. But on the other hand, if I decide to use a caching plugin, then I have to absolutely choose Client mode for it to work properly. Both sides have their goods and bads.
Hi,
to revert back to the lighter “country only” data file, go to Slimstat > Settings > Tracker and change the toggle back to “Country”. Then go to the Maintenance tab and uninstall/install the MaxMind Geolite file again. Slimstat will download the smaller one, and will start using it right away.
Best,
Jason
Thank you, does it leave any trace behind (the 60MB package?) that I have to delete manually from my FTP?
I’ve been meaning to ask you another thing these days but I forgot, so I think I’ll ask now instead of opening a new thread.
I’ve read about the new Rest API of Slimstat but I’m a bit confused since I don’t know how all this works.
You say that it can work with external applications, does this mean I can have my Slimstat analytics on the go, for example on a smartphone third party app?
If yes, could you please explain/show the easiest possible way how?
You know I always wish Slimstat the best and to see it grow, maybe you would consider creating an android app for it in the future? π
Hi,
you are absolutely correct. The new API will allow other developers to do exactly what you describe. However, at this time unfortunately I don’t have the bandwidth (and the knowledge) to work on a smartphone app. Hopefully someone else will pick up the slack and run with it π
And no, no traces are left behind: Slimstat is respectful of the environment, and does its best to not litter π
Best,
Jason
Thanks for the clarification Jason.
Do you know anyone that got it running on an existing smartphone app through the API?
Unfortunately we’re not aware of any applications leveraging our REST API yet.
It’s ok, I’m looking forward to the first one that does π
Please let me know here if you spot any, at any time in the future.
