    Greetings,

I am working on a site/blogg that primarily relies on SEO traffic. They are using Yoast however it has been set to populate the permalinks in a way so that it uses both the post title+date.

    Example link:
    http://berlinlovesyou.com/2017/08/06/berlin-premiere-the-jt-leroy-story-documentary/

The recommended option in my oppinion is show only the title
so the url should be http://siteurl/post-title

Easier readability for user = higher click through rate (CTR) = better SEO rankings.

Anyone that has done this change in bulk before and have experience with this?

    What I am considering is
1: will I drop a lot of organic traffic initially, is it very likely to recover from it?

2: Will I have to re-direct every post that I change the permalink on with a plugin like re-direction. If so can I do this in bulk? Most if not al of their posts have organic links connected to them.

This blog is run by friends of mine, they are making next to no money on it hence their budget is very small. I am helping to to start monetizing on it now. And if I would be required to manually re-direct all posts, it would simply cost to much time.

Any ideas or suggestions would be truly appreciated!

    Kind regards,
    Robin

  • Hi Robin,

If you are trying to change your structure we suggest using this guide: How to Change your Permalink Structure and then using this Permalink Helper Tool to place some rules in your .htaccess file. You can locate your .htaccess file by going to SEO->Tools->File Editor and then pasting the rules at the top. Though, since we do not know your site, server configuration, or set-up we are unable to say for sure if the above guide or tool would work.

We would suggest creating a staging site to make sure it works as expected. This guide explains more about creating a staging site: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-staging-environment-for-a-wordpress-site/

When those rules are placed in your .htaccess file you can expect any time a user lands on the old permalink structure to be redirected to the new one.

Unfortuantely, we do not know your site or set-up so we cannot say how your organic traffic will fare. It may improve or it may drop. We do not know.
