I have a page setup for an event my club is hosting. We charge a registration fee – but part of the registration means lunch is provided. I would like to get some sort of “count” on the lunch preferences with the registration payment, but NOT have any additional cost associated with it.

So… I am trying this trick
[wp_cart_button name=”Lunch Preferences” price=”.00001″ var1=”Menu|Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich|Turkey sandwich|Ham sandwich|Veggie sandwich”]

where the price is way under 1 penny.

My question is: Is PayPal going to process this correctly (ie. not charge them, but still show their preferences when they register)?

Hi, I think that shortcode will not work. Have you tested your shortcode yet?

Actually, setting the price to .00000001 DID work! PayPal shows the item, with a $0 price.

You are not meant to do $0 transaction via paypal.

I think an alternative setup for this is to use a squeeze form similar to the one offered in our WP eStore plugin:

When you are ready to charge money, then you can use the cart system.

Whether paypal is “meant” to do a $0 transaction or not, it works. The benefit (to me) is that it keeps the items they purchase and the items I simply need to know about together in a single place (the paypal invoice). From the looks of the squeeze form, not only would have I have to dramatically increase the complexity of the site by installing a full blown e-commerce plugin, it would split the information into multiple locations.
