    Good afternoon all,

I received an email advising me that WordPress 4.8 was available. I have just got round to updating it, but am unable. My site’s dashboard shows that I have 5 updates that require attention, however, upon trying to visit the back-end of the site, I am taken to a page stating ‘Fatal error – can’t use method return value in write context’.

This is the first time this has occurred. My site is http://fostereditorial.co.uk/.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Thank you, James, for your prompt assistance. The issue is now resolved.

    Have a great day.
