Anyone who is already a member (i.e. a subscriber) already has free membership automatically. A subscriber is the same as s2Member Level 0.
Okay. I am using woocommerce and have existing users (customer role)
when a customer wants to sign up to the free member level, I just want them to click on the “Become a member” button and this action will change user role from customer to “s2member level 0”
just now for a customer to become a member they need to fill the form “wp-login.php?action=register”
as users already have an account on the website they are getting the error
ERROR: This username is already registered. Please choose another one.
ERROR: This email is already registered, please choose another one.
is there any way around this?

If you want tight integration with WooCommerce (which you didn’t mention before), then the s2Member developers have a specific plugin for that called WooCommerce Restrictions.
