Upgrade PHP?

While I didn’t seem to have the more serious problems others did, the latest update of SSP didn’t work because it needed an update to PHP. I have no idea how to go about that, nor did I find any simple instructions. I did find instructions on how to roll back the SSP version, which I did. My podcast is working again, but I’m seriously unhappy with SSP for creating an update which broke things without warning and then expected me to take some sort of action regarding the server set up to fix it.
