My client tested the pro version and modified some sliders. It turns out they don’t need any of the pro features, but when I revert them to the free version, the sliders are broken. Specifically, there is a blank slide at the start of each slider.

As far as I can tell, this is caused by the pro version saving information about layers as the first entry in the array of slides.

How can I downgrade to the free version without having broken sliders?

I checked the FAQs and I saw this:
“I want to upgrade to WordPress PRO, Is it compatible with Free version?

Yes, both WordPress Pro and free version are compeletely[sic] compatible with each other, so you can safely upgrade to Pro version without affecting your current sliders.”
