Looking for a notifications plugin

Hi there. I’m developing a wordpress website to be used as a company Intranet. Things have gone well so far but I’ve noticed that my specific needs in a notifications plugin are eluding me.
We need something very similar to what Google uses, where there’s a notification icon, you click it and a dropdown box with all the notifications shows up. The notifications we need will pop up when someone posts to a category you are a member of. In this instance, the categories are the various departments, so we want to have it set so that a user will be notified when there is a message sent to their specific department, but users in other departments wont be notified.
The users are all handled by UltimateMember, and while it DOES have its own notifications extension, it is a paid plugin and the screenshots/description show that it doesnt cover posts or categories, so it doesnt even do what we want it to do in the first place.
Does anyone know where I could find a plugin or widget to do this specifically, because I’ve had no luck so far.
On a side note – the plugin should not send emails (the point of the intranet is to reduce our email spam) and it shouldnt be a push message, as we don’t want to annoy people. We simply want a purely internal notifications system.
