Speeding up the media attachment loading time

I have used the wordpress media attachment page to create a slideshow of images. It is working well except it is quite slow to load.

I would like to try and speed up the slideshow, so that it is a bit more seamless. One thought was to injecting a bit of code to preload the images on the parent page. Secondly I was thinking about shifting the site onto a content delivery manager. Does anyone have any other suggestions, thoughts? The image files are not particularly big (168kb) so it could be the script that slows it down.
