Advanced blog design

I am new to fairly new to WP but come from a pretty good programming background and can find my way around php &sql Databases, I am running it on my site and have found my way around the basics. However I am trying to find some tutorials on designing a site with WP without making it look stereotypically a WP site. Any good links to tutorials or sites that show this type of thing. My reasoning behind this is I like the idea of wordpress, and what it can do but even with all the hundreds of templetes I have found they all look the same to me.
