Thanks for the good words and for your question. I don’t have any experience with the Document Gallery plugin, but I believe that MLA can provide an equivalent solution for most applications.
If you have assigned terms in the Att. Tags and Att. Categories taxonomies to your items you can use several MLA shortcodes to compose galleries filtered by term values. The [mla_tag_cloud] and [mla_term_list] shortcodes can be used to present terms to the user and term selections can be passed to the [mla_gallery] shortcode to display the results. You can also use the “Taxonomy term keyword(s) search” feature for a text-based term search.
There are several simple examples in the Settings/Media Library Assistant Documentation tab. There are also many earlier support topic with more advanced examples. Here is one recent topic that links to earlier topics with solution variations:
