Restore problems

I successfully moved my blog to a new host and restored my database, however, the categories seem to be gone. And also the formatting in the blog posts seems off.

I backed up the data base with the wordpress backup plugin (*sql file) and then restored in the php admin section.

I think I understand now why the categories weren’t backed up (I am trying to get another database backup from my old host company), but I am not sure about the formatting… special characters (like Umlauts… ä,ü,ö) are missing and replaced by a weird character and the line underneath the post title is now “underlined”, which it wasn’t before.

Can anyone help?
