Hello,
Im having trouble setting a custom featured image as one of the steps. Is the featured image to be used for this? what image type/size does it require?

Hi Jake,

Yes, You can use default featured image in a step.But you don’t have to set custom featured image in steps.
Please check below added screenshot.

Regarding the size of image.The images automatically adjusts according to step circle size.

Ive set the featured image with the picture im after in the area you indicated but its showing the default clock picture.

Hi Jake,

I have checked your process and noticed that you have created process steps using Process with icons shortcode

[cool-process type="default" show-posts="3" steps-in-row="3" animation="no"]

In order to integrate images in steps. You have to use Process with images shortcode like this:-

[cool-process type="with-image" steps-in-row="3" show-posts="3"]
