Write my first Plugin?

Hello, I want to write my first plugin but am not sure where to start. What I want to do is add a simple “publish to home” option in the write panel. I’m thinking I can probably use the Publish, Unpublish option, then add a 3rd function call for it that will publish a post to the home page or just to it’s category page.
